Gary O’Neill
Managing Director · Former U.S. Patent Examiner · Registered Patent Agent
For a decade, Gary O’Neill approved and rejected patents for the U.S. government. He learned patent strategy the hard way — by competing with the best patent agents and attorneys in the country, including practitioners representing many DOW 30 and Fortune 500 companies such as Amazon, AT&T, Bosch, Canon, Eastman Kodak, Facebook, Johnson & Johnson, 3M, Intel, Lucent, Mitsubishi, Northrop Grumman, Panasonic, Samsung, Seiko, Sharp, Sony, and Texas Instruments, along with leading research universities including Caltech, MIT, and Princeton.
Examining well over 1,000 applications in complex, technologically advanced engineering fields gave him a rare insider view of exactly how the U.S. patent system does — and too often does not — work. By studying the successes and failures of the best practitioners in real prosecution, he developed a deep understanding of which tactics win and which waste an inventor’s money. Those hard-won insights became the foundation of the approach used by the team at Examiners Edge®.
“Very few executives recognize how to leverage the entire U.S. patent system to minimize threats, capitalize on opportunities, and gain strategic advantage over competitors,” Gary notes. It is that stewardship perspective that drives the firm’s work — helping company leaders protect their profits and checkmate the competition through smart use of the patent system.
Gary is a Registered U.S. Patent Agent, a seasoned engineering manager, and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. As Managing Director, he leads a multidisciplinary team of specialized patent professionals and oversees the development of patent products that proactively protect clients’ market share.
